The Independent Media Commission (IMC) has strongly condemned the impersonation of Radio Bo Kiss 104.1 FM following a complaint from the station about a falsified audio broadcast circulating on WhatsApp.
The audio falsely attributes inflammatory statements to the station, including unverified claims about the death of musician Lansana Sheriff, popularly known as Steady Bongo. Contrary to the claims in the broadcast, official reports confirm that the musician’s death resulted from a motorbike accident, not a gunshot as alleged in the impersonation.
The audio also makes incendiary tribal remarks, which the IMC warns could incite public unrest.
In a press release, the IMC denounced the act as unethical and dangerous, warning that it threatens public peace and the reputation of credible media institutions. The Commission commended Radio Bo Kiss 104.1 FM for quickly clarifying its non-involvement and reaffirming its commitment to professionalism.
The IMC has pledged to launch a thorough investigation to identify the perpetrators and ensure they face legal consequences. It also urged citizens to verify information before sharing it online, emphasizing the dangers of misinformation and hate speech.
“All station managers, editors, and journalists must adhere to the IMC Act 2020 and Media Regulations 2022,” the Commission stated, highlighting the importance of ethical journalism in fostering national cohesion.
The IMC reiterated its zero-tolerance policy for actions that undermine media credibility and public safety, promising swift action to uphold the integrity of licensed media outlets.
