The High Commission of India in Sierra Leone, in collaboration with the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), and WorldFish, successfully hosted the India–Sierra Leone Roundtable on Aquaculture and Fisheries.
The event aimed to explore strategic partnerships for developing a sustainable aquaculture ecosystem in Sierra Leone.
A team of Indian scientists, led by Dr. J.K. Jena, Deputy Director General of ICAR, engaged in productive discussions with Sierra Leonean policymakers, entrepreneurs, and other key stakeholders. The dialogue focused on advancing aquaculture practices, technology transfer, and investment opportunities in the fisheries sector.
Members of the Indian diaspora business community in Sierra Leone also participated actively, expressing keen interest in investing in freshwater aquaculture projects an initiative expected to further strengthen bilateral cooperation in food security and economic growth.
The High Commission of India expressed appreciation to WorldFish for its role in facilitating the visit of the ICAR scientists and Indian entrepreneurs, underscoring the contribution of this collaboration to Sierra Leone’s Feed Salone initiative.
As part of the visit, the Indian delegation visited Holy Rosary Secondary School in Kenema, where discussions centered on establishing a freshwater aquaculture project on the school’s premises. The proposed initiative aims to support the school feeding programme and foster entrepreneurship in aquaculture among female students.
The High Commission reaffirmed its commitment to deepening India–Sierra Leone cooperation in sustainable development, capacity building, and innovation for shared prosperity.
