On July 25, 2024, Minister of Information and Civic Education Chernor Bah visited the Independent Media Commission (IMC) at its Aureole House headquarters in Freetown, marking his first engagement with the newly led Commission under Chairman Joseph Egbenda Kapuwa Esq.
Chairman Kapuwa welcomed Minister Bah, highlighting the IMC’s recent progress and commitment. Executive Secretary Kahlil Kallon outlined the Commission’s activities, including complaint hearings, regional visits, and policy implementations. Commissioner James Tamba Lebbie discussed ongoing national consultations and proposed revisions to the IMC Act to include online media. Other Commissioners raised concerns about operational space, salaries, and capacity building.
Minister Bah acknowledged these challenges and announced a budget increase for the IMC, reflecting the President’s support. He committed to addressing resource constraints, improving salaries and conditions, and ensuring media houses comply with licensing regulations. He also promised to advocate for additional support from the EU and IDEA International, and to engage with NATCA about space allocation for the IMC.
The visit concluded with Commissioner Ethel Johnson thanking the Minister and praising Chairman Kapuwa’s leadership. The IMC’s role in regulating media practices and ensuring a balanced media landscape is crucial for maintaining high journalism standards and supporting democratic processes.
