On Monday 17th of October 2022, the government of president Julius Maada Bio decided to take charge and bury victims of the August 10th violent protest, who were brutally killed by the Sierra Leone Police.
The government made this announcement in a Press Release, noting that they had an agreement with the families to give the 27 people who were killed and some by strayed bullets “a dignified burial”.
” How can one give a family member a dignified burial when they were denied access to even see the remains of their loved ones? This is unacceptable, “some of the family members stated”.
Hon. Chernor Ramadan Maju Bah (Chericoco) has added his voice to the way and manner in which those who were killed were treated and how their families were denied access to their remains.
On tweeter, Hon. Maju Bah said that the way the government of Julius Maada Bio handled the unfortunate August 10 disaster is bereft of any spirit of true reconciliation.
” Refusing the victim’s families the free opportunity to decide when and how they bury their loved ones is inhumane, unlawful, and outrightly demeaning”, he started.
Several well-meaning Sierra Leoneans have condemned the action of the government but the Minister of Information and Communication Mohamed Rahman Swaray stated that the government took that decision together with the families, and it is purely based on security reasons.
