The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) is undergoing a major transformation under the leadership of Inspector General William Fayia Sellu, with a series of reforms aimed at modernizing law enforcement and strengthening public trust.
A key initiative under Sellu’s tenure is the strategic installation of CCTV cameras across Freetown, a move designed to deter crime and enhance real-time surveillance.
The technology-driven approach enables law enforcement officers to monitor activities more effectively, track criminal behavior, and respond swiftly to incidents. The integration of advanced surveillance aligns with global trends in modern policing, ensuring the SLP is better equipped to combat sophisticated criminal activities.
Beyond security enhancements, Sellu is leading a shift towards a community-oriented policing model, fostering stronger ties between law enforcement and the public. The SLP’s transition to the Sierra Leone Police Service (SLPS) reflects a commitment to a more service-driven and citizen-focused approach. This rebranding emphasizes professionalism, accountability, and engagement with communities to build trust and collaboration.
Under Sellu’s guidance, officers are being trained to prioritize public service over force, reinforcing ethical standards and promoting transparency within the institution. The enhanced surveillance capabilities also serve as an accountability measure, ensuring officers adhere to professional conduct, further boosting public confidence in the force.
In addition to local reforms, Sellu has strengthened international partnerships, collaborating with organizations such as the United Nations, African Union, and European Union to enhance policing standards and adopt best practices. These alliances are expected to bolster Sierra Leone’s law enforcement capabilities, positioning the SLPS as a model for modern policing in West Africa.
With crime evolving and public expectations rising, Sellu’s leadership marks a pivotal moment in Sierra Leone’s law enforcement history. His commitment to innovation and community collaboration is setting a new standard for policing in the country.
Great work done Sir keep it up 👍
This sounds like brown envelope journalism. While he is busy “transforming” SLP, we still see police on the street looking like they are on kush, we still get harrassed by officers looking for bribes and he the IG himself is harrassing journalists. We have a long ways to go.
