The Ministry of Social Welfare, together with the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD) and other partner organizations, gathered to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
Brima Sheriff, Chairman of the NCPD, in his statement called for justice, dignity, and concrete state action. He expressed regret over the longstanding social attitudes that marginalise persons with disabilities and stressed that SierraLeone must stop treating disability as a secondary issue.

He outlined ongoing reforms, including strategic plans, community engagement, and new initiatives to empower over 400,000 people with disabilities nationwide. He also announced the introduction of a national mentorship framework, enhanced data collection for service delivery, expanded training opportunities, and strengthened collaboration with ministries and international partners.
Minister of Social Welfare, Melrose Karminty, delivering her speech, stressed that no nation can develop while leaving behind 15% of its population. She highlighted key achievements in 2025, including legal reforms, health outreach programs, new training centers, digital skills projects, and strengthened cooperation with the NCPD. She called on all ministries, development partners, and the public to integrate disability inclusion into every policy and program.

Chief Minister, David Sengeh reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to building an inclusive Sierra Leone where persons with disabilities can fully participate in national development. He stressed the need to strengthen institutional frameworks and ensure that national policies reflect the rights and aspirations of persons with disabilities across all sectors. He also urged development partners, civil society, and community leaders to deepen collaboration and break down social and structural barriers.
The event underscored a shared determination to advance an inclusive society, backed by sustained political will and partnerships.
