Vice President of Sierra Leone, Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh has unveiled plans for a comprehensive national task force aimed at tackling the scourge of a deadly synthetic drug known as Kush.
This initiative, the Vice President said will involve all facets of society and will be replicated at district and chiefdom levels.
Speaking at the Town Hall Meeting on Kush organized by the Ministry of Information and Civic Education, Vice President Jalloh emphasized the gravity of the situation.
The Vice President stated that as Chairman of the Police Council, he has ordered that people arrested in connection to KUSH are refused bail, pointing out that two magistrates have been assigned to deal with KUSH related cases.
He also revealed that they have arrested 7 people in relation to 2 containers apprehended recently in connection to KUSH.
“Over the weekend, we intercepted two containers and 7 people are in custody. They will never see sunlight, they will be charged and will be sentenced, and no amount of lawyer will take them out from where they are,” he emphasized.

Zero Kush Campaign
The Kunike Sanda Chiefdom Youth Council, led by Mohamed Samuel Kargbo, has been actively involved in the fight against kush and other related drugs in the Chiefdom and the country since 2022. The council initiated the Zero Kush Campaign, which included a peace jogging event. Participants in the event included representatives from various organizations and stakeholders within the constituency and district. A series of speeches were delivered on the after-effects of drug addiction. Additionally, refreshments and a sound system were provided, with the council spending approximately 10,000 Nle on the event.
In 2023, the council, in partnership with Mr. Yoni Sesay, launched the Masingbi Army Against Kush and other related drugs. This initiative involved kush sensitization efforts in villages, schools, ghettos, and bars, as well as house-to-house visits for awareness and the arrest of dealers, in collaboration with the Masingbi Police.
The council is pleased to let the general public know that it was the first institution to introduce Drug Addict Health Maintenance in the middle of 2023, providing support to addicts with medication, food, cash, clothes, and drug education. Thanks to the Masingbi CHC and our dedicated medical practitioner brother Tane B for being with us. However, the council expressed disappointment at the lack of support from Chiefdom and district stakeholders despite their extensive engagement over the years.
The council appealed to the government, NGOs, and development partners to hold an emergency meeting to address the issue of kush and other related drugs. They proposed involving high-ranking officials like Ministers, I G P, Military heads, Honourable, Paramount Chiefs, and councilors, and giving them a two-month ultimatum to show significant progress. Failure to do so would result in suspension or dismissal. The council believed that with this strategy, kush could become history in Sierra Leone in less than a month.
The council also called for an end to the stigmatization and detention of kush addicts, emphasizing the need for proper treatment and care for these individuals. They urged the government to consider the long-term impact on the next generation, as a large percentage of young people are vulnerable to drug abuse. Thanks to the O C Dumbuya of the Masingbi Police Station for working with us tirelessly and always being ready to patrol with us anywhere and anytime. A few days ago some brilliant youth decided to crack some kush dealers and addicts at around 1:00 am to compensate for the effort of the council and they were able to arrest over 30 kush dealers and addicts and we have sent them to Magburaka. After yesterday’s(Saturday) raiding for kush dealers and addicts in the bushes and hills, we decided to reach out to the Masingbi Luma and educate the business people coming from various communities and they commended our efforts, but the act of the police yesterday( Saturday) is uncalled for, instead patrolling with us they choose to chase bike riders and they arrested over 20 bikes just to pocket themselves. Please head of traffic we are not against the arresting of unlicensed bikes but as of now we only have one fight( Kush).
The council’s efforts is commendable, and their plea for support and understanding from the relevant authorities and stakeholders.
