The president of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), Ahmed Sahid Nasralla, has commended journalists for reporting on the June 24th, 2023 elections professionally, and in an impartial manner.

“Journalists were at their best in election coverage,” he stated.

The President made this amendment while speaking to journalists at the headquarters of the Association on Campbell Street in Freetown a few days after the country had its national elections.

He said journalists put up professional conduct due to the many trainings they have gone through prior to the elections.

He said the conduct of journalists during the election was encouraging citing a report put together by the Media Reform Coordinating Group (MRCG), which he said spoke highly of how journalists conducted themselves during the country’s multi-tier elections.

Nasrallah revealed that there is no report concerning attacks on journalists while covering the elections.

However, he noted that some journalists were trapped at the party headquarters of the main opposition, the All People’s Congress Party after security forces stormed the office, while the Managing Editor of Salone Compass had his vehicle vandalized.

Nasralla revealed that the police swiftly intervened and escorted these journalists that were unharmed.

He further spoke highly against the pollution of fake news, misinformation, and disinformation. He vehemently condemned the rampant spread of information from sources that are not mandated to do so.
