The Judiciary of Sierra Leone is in mourning following the death of Honourable Justice Dr. Abou Bakarr Muhammad Binneh-Kamara, a respected Justice of the Court of Appeal, who passed away on Tuesday, 15th July 2025, in Freetown after a brief illness.
In recognition of his distinguished service to the Judiciary and the legal profession, the Honourable Chief Justice, His Lordship Justice Komba Kamanda, has ordered that the Judiciary flag be flown at half-mast starting 16th July 2025 as a mark of respect.
Justice Binneh-Kamara was widely regarded for his commitment to justice, humility, and intellectual excellence. He began his judicial career as a Magistrate, rising through the ranks to become a High Court Judge and most recently, in April 2025, a Justice of the Court of Appeal. Throughout his career, he presided over several complex and high-profile cases with integrity and fairness.
Apart from his judicial duties, Justice Binneh-Kamara was an academic and scholar with several postgraduate degrees, including a Master in Public Administration & Management from Njala University, a Master of Philosophy in Communications Law & Policy from Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone, and a Ph.D. in Media & War Crimes Jurisprudence from the University of Bedfordshire in the UK. His early career also included work as a journalist with the Standard Times Newspaper.
He was deeply admired both locally and internationally for his contributions to constitutional law, legal education, and communication policy. His legacy includes the mentoring of a generation of legal professionals who respected him for his intellectual rigour and compassionate approach to justice.
In a heartfelt statement, Chief Justice Kamanda described his passing as “a tremendous loss not only to the Judiciary but to the legal profession and the country at large,” and extended condolences on behalf of the entire Judiciary to the bereaved family, colleagues, and friends.
The Janazah prayer and burial for the late Justice Binneh-Kamara will be held on Sunday, 20th July 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at the Hezbullah Mosque, Water Street, Congo Town, Freetown.

A solemn memorial session in his honour is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, 24th July 2025 at the main Law Court Building.
