Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio has been appointed as the 14th speaker for the morning session of the General Debate at the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
The session, which begins today, will see global leaders convening in New York to discuss pressing international issues, including climate change, conflict resolution, and global economic recovery.
President Bio, known for his strong advocacy on peacebuilding and development in Africa, is expected to address key issues affecting Sierra Leone and the wider African continent, particularly around sustainable development, climate resilience, and good governance.
The 2024 General Assembly comes at a critical juncture, as the world continues to grapple with the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, geopolitical tensions, and climate emergencies. This year’s theme, “Rebuilding Trust and Reigniting Global Solidarity,” underscores the urgency of multilateral cooperation.
With Sierra Leone recently taking a seat as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, President Bio’s address is anticipated to highlight the nation’s role in promoting peace and security on the global stage.
