The Commissioner of the Anit-Corruption Commission (ACC) of Sierra Leone, Francis Ben Kaifala has narrated his relationship with the late ASP Mathew Moiwah Gbanya commonly called Boyka after he was allegedly shot dead in Makeni on Saturday 8 April 2023 while on duty.
In a post shared on his social media handles, the ACC Boss narrated his relationship with the late police officer over the years.
Read his narration below:
“I met him when he was attached to Law Courts as OSD back in 2008/09. We became instantly attracted and he would keep in touch even when I was away on studies in UK and US.
When I was appointed ACC Commissioner, he came to the office after returning from UN Duty overseas and solemnly told me that all he wanted was to protect me from harm. I remember asking him when he would want to transition? His answer was “now brother.
“I don’t want to be with anyone else but you”.
I called IG Sovula and he was immediately redeployed to my security detail as a Bodyguard. Since then, ASP Gbanya was more than a bodyguard to me. He was family – a Giant Protector.
Until his recent redeployment to Makeni, for two years we walked side by side as part of my security detail and he was an amazing professional and brother.
He loved me and even while in Makeni he would always call to express his wish of one day working with me in another capacity and would send me prayers weekly. When in Freetown he would come to see me at ACC or home before returning and when he can’t he would call to explain why.
I loved him, my family loved him. His daughter and my daughter, Frances are so sisterly to each other. I knew that one man who truly loved me and wished good for me always was Gbanya.
I woke up to the news of his cold-blooded assassination by Cowards.
I thought about his loving wife, his son who he asked me to mentor and his daughter who he loved so so much. It’s too sad and painful. I pray they are brought to justice soon”.
