Alhaji Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella, Chairman of the Energy Governance Coordination Group in Sierra Leone, has publicly apologized on behalf of the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA) for the persistent inefficiencies in the country’s power supply system.

Speaking on AYV’s Wake Up Sierra Leone, Dr. Yumkella expressed regret over the poor management of electricity distribution, revenue collection, and the type of meters provided to consumers over time.

“I apologize on behalf of EDSA for the inefficiency in our power supply in the country,” he stated. “But we need a quantum leap for a more efficient EDSA.”

His apology follows concerns raised during the interview about how electricity is not just a matter of convenience but also a necessity for livelihoods, healthcare, and economic stability. Many businesses and critical healthcare services suffer due to frequent power cuts, making reliable electricity supply a pressing national issue.

Dr. Yumkella acknowledged that while improvements are needed, significant reforms are underway to enhance EDSA’s efficiency. “It can be ten times better, but we need a quantum leap to a more efficient EDSA, which we are working towards,” he added.

His apology comes amid public frustration over EDSA’s failure to take responsibility for its shortcomings. Critics pointed out that while the authority had never officially apologized to the general public for its inefficiencies, it had conveniently issued an apology in November last year to the First Lady following power disruptions in Kenema.
