Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on Climate Change, Renewable Energy and Food Security Dr. Kandeh Yumkella, has been awarded the ECREEE – ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency Lifetime Leadership Award, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to advancing clean, reliable, and inclusive energy across Africa.
Receiving the award this evening in Banjul, Dr. Yumkella described the honour as a reflection not only of his personal journey but also of the collective efforts of the region to build resilient and sustainable economies.
“From my years at UNIDO, leading the creation of ECREEE, to serving as Chair of UN-Energy, and later as the founding CEO of Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL), I have always believed that access to sustainable energy is both a right and a catalyst for transformation,” Dr. Yumkella said.

He emphasised that the award represents a broader commitment by West Africa to promote energy security, climate resilience, and inclusive growth. “To see how far we have come as a region inspires me even more to keep pushing for Africa’s energy transition,” he added.
Dr. Yumkella expressed gratitude to ECOWAS, ECREEE, and all partners who have supported initiatives aimed at achieving sustainable energy for all. He reiterated that the struggle for energy security and inclusive development continues, underscoring the importance of collective action in lighting the path to a sustainable future.
