The Kenema Government Hospital has opened its first-ever stroke unit, a state-of-the-art facility equipped with the latest technology and staffed by highly trained professionals. The unit aims to revolutionize the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of stroke patients in Sierra Leone.
The opening of the stroke unit is a major development for the healthcare system in Sierra Leone. Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability in the country, and access to quality care is often limited. The new unit will provide much-needed specialized care for stroke patients, improving their chances of recovery and preventing complications.
The unit is equipped with cutting-edge technology, including a CT scanner for rapid diagnosis of strokes, dedicated stroke rehabilitation unit, a team of neurologists, nurses, and physiotherapists trained in stroke care. The unit will also offer a range of preventive services, such as blood pressure monitoring and cholesterol testing.
The Kenema Government Hospital stroke unit is the second in Sierra Leone, following the opening of a unit at the Connaught Hospital in Freetown in 2018.
It’s a good thing, but expertise problem is going to hinder it a bit
I’m quite sure that they are still going to deploy those doctor and the physiotherapist that have been there, instead of bringing those who are specialist of the particular area.
I have been part of the trainers as a Physiotherapist trained in neurorehabilitation. I wish the unit will develop and serve more people in need of specialized stroke care. I came from the District and will continue to give technical expertise at no cost. Congratulations to Kenema Government Hospital for a brave move.
