The question on the lips of many political observers is which political party would the Leader of the National Grand Coalition (NGC) in Parliament, Hon Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella choose should he decide to take the invitation extended to him from either the main opposition All People’s Congress (APC) or the ruling sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP).
It is known that the APC leadership sometimes back formally met with Consortium of Progressive Political Party (CoPPP) in which it was agreed that the Consortium throw its weight behnd the APC ahead of the multitier election.
In which case, according political pundits, it is very likely that KKY will become APC’s 2023 running mate.
At the same time, very recently when the SLPP leader, President Bio visited Kambia and met face to face with KKY where he formally extended an invitation to KKY to return home to his former party, SLPP, which Bio reminded him was formed by KKY’s late father and others.
Whist acknowledging the SLPP leader’s invitation, KKY did not give his word as to whether or not he was willing to return to SLPP. All he told the SLPP leader was, “I will consider.”
On a similar token, if KKY falls for Bio’s bait, it is also equally likely that he will eventually replace the current vice President as Bio’s 2023 running mate.
Reliable sources have intimated this press that the APC would prefer Dr. Samura Kamara and KKY to be the party’s standard bearers for 2023, as presidential flagbearer and running mate, respectively.
Against this background, this past weekend, the membership of CoPPP reportedly honored an invitation from KKY at hi residence at IMATT, Hill Station, Freetown.
In attendance were representatives from the fourteen political parties that make up the membership of the consortium.
Briefing this press on the meeting, the APC National Secretary General, Amb. Osman Foday Yansaneh said the purpose of the meeting was to get response from the NGC leadership in Parliament about the proposed coalition of their parties for the 2023 elections and to chart the way forward.
Yansaneh disclosed that the meeting was very productive and fruitful. He further disclosed that the NGC leader told them that despite the news doing the rounds regrading this relationship with the SLPP leader. According to the APC scribe, all KKY said was “I am a still a member of CoPPP.”
The NGC leader, he furthered, assured CoPPP of his unflinching support to the Consortium while making a presentation to the group. Yansaneh further disclosed that CoPPP is seriously working to formalize the consortium to form a merger for the 2023 elections.
He stated that CoPPP will continue to urge the government to account on its policies, push for promotion of human rights, the rule of law and protect democracy.
He accused the SLPP government of having committed many human rights violations and abuse of the rule of law, noting that these concerns have been channeled to the international community.
CoPPP, he said, will tour all the districts in the country to popularize its agenda; adding that their slogan for the 2023 election is: “Bot game for betteh Salone”.
