Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara ESQ, a prominent member of the main opposition All Peoples Congress Party (APC) and legal representative to Former President Ernest Bai Koroma, has expressed deep concern about the recent corruption investigation involving the Clerk of Parliament, Hon. Paran Umar Tarawalley, and his wife, Mrs. Abibatu Tarawally.

Kamara raised questions about when citizens would benefit from the government’s actions.

On January 14, 2024, the Anti-Corruption Commission released a press statement shedding light on an ongoing investigation into claims that the Clerk of Parliament improperly employed his wife without adhering to due processes. The inquiry also revealed that Mrs. Abibatu Tarawally was receiving a monthly salary without fulfilling her duties.

In response, Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara compared the Sierra Leone situation to Michaela Wrong’s novel “It’s our turn to eat,” emphasizing the Clerk of Parliament’s wife being on the payroll without contributing any work. While acknowledging that critics may link such issues to the APC, Kamara questioned when it would be the people’s turn to benefit from governance.

He remarked, “Sierra Leone today, is best described in Michaela Wrong’s novel “ It’s our turn to eat”. The wife of the Clerk of Parliament reportedly on payroll for no work done. Critics will say, it was started by APC. But, when will it be the turn of the people to eat.”

The corruption investigation has raised concerns about accountability and transparency in the government, particularly due to the involvement of high-profile individuals. Kamara’s statement mirrors a broader sentiment of frustration among citizens seeking fair and just governance.

As the Anti-Corruption Commission continues its investigation, the government’s response to increasing calls for accountability remains uncertain. This situation challenges the current administration’s commitment to combating corruption and ensuring public office benefits citizens.

Sierra Leoneans are closely monitoring the investigation’s developments, recognizing that the outcome could significantly impact public trust in government institutions. Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara’s vocal position serves as a reminder of the ongoing fight against corruption and the importance of leaders prioritizing the welfare of the people over personal gain.
