Sierra Leone Labour Congress Gears Up for May Day Celebrations with Historic Labour Conference and March Past
The Sierra Leone Labour Congress (SLLC) has officially announced plans for the celebration of International Workers’ Day—popularly known as May Day.
Under the theme “Shaping the World of Work: Innovation, Digital Transformation and Just Transition.” The 2025 celebrations will feature the country’s first-ever Social Dialogue Forum and National Labour Conference, alongside a major workers’ march through the streets of Freetown.
In collaboration with the Ministry of Employment, Labour and Social Security and the Sierra Leone Employers’ Federation, the SLLC will host a two-day Labour Conference from Tuesday, April 29 to Wednesday, April 30 at the Miatta Conference Centre.
The forum aims to foster constructive dialogue among workers, employers, and policymakers on critical issues shaping the world of work, with a strong focus on innovation, digital transformation, and inclusive labour transitions.
The highlight of the May Day celebrations will take place on Thursday, May 1, 2025, featuring a grand March Past that brings together workers and employers from both the formal and informal sectors. Participants from the East End of Freetown are expected to assemble at PZ at 8:00 a.m., while those from the West End will converge at the Aberdeen Road/Wilkinson Road junction.
Both processions will proceed to the Miatta Conference Centre, where the main commemorative event will be held.
In a public call to action, the SLLC is urging participation from all categories of workers—ranging from traders, teachers, factory and office workers, to bike riders, drivers, musicians, technicians, and fish sellers.
The Congress emphasizes that this united show of solidarity across the labour force is vital in advocating for better working conditions and inclusive economic growth.
