The Ministry of Employment, Labour and Social Security (MELSS) has completed its nationwide consultations with stakeholders on the Social Protection Bill. This initiative aims to build a robust legal framework for social protection in Sierra Leone, with strong support from citizens and social protection actors.
The Bill, initially drafted in 2022, underwent renewed consultations funded by the World Bank to ensure comprehensive input. These consultations addressed concerns about previous exclusions, aiming for broad-based participation.
“Gathering insights and recommendations from all stakeholders is crucial,” said a MELSS spokesperson. “This Bill will serve the purpose of protecting the social protection sector in Sierra Leone for years to come, and we want to ensure it’s truly inclusive.”
A key feature of the Bill is the establishment of a Social Protection Authority. This Authority will oversee the Social Protection Bread Basket, a centralized fund for social protection activities. Implementing agencies will be able to request funding from this pool to carry out their programs.
The Bill has been met with significant positive feedback, reflecting a strong public desire for a more effective social protection system. By ensuring broad participation, the government and its partners aim to create a system that addresses the needs of all Sierra Leoneans.
The successful completion of these provincial engagements marks a critical step towards the enactment of this landmark legislation.
