The Department of Legal Studies, Faculty of Law, Final Honors 1 at Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone has made some clarifications with regard the alleged attacked of former student, Victor Onie Williams while in class leading to his death on Thursday 5th December 2024.
After the death of Williams broke on the internet in the evening hours of Thursday 5th December 2024, information came out that the deceased had an attack while in class for lectures and was rushed to the hospital where he passed away.
According to a report from the Department of Legal Studies, Faculty of Law, Final Honors 1 at Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone during their visit to the bereaved family on Friday 6th December 2024, disclosed that the deceased Williams did not attend classes on Thursday, the day of his demise as alleged he had an attack in class.
It was stated that the mother of the deceased told them that his son visited her at around 2:00 PM after returning from purchasing fabrics for sewing. She further stated that her son informed her that he was going to visit a close friend in the Eastend part of Freetown. Shortly after his son’s departure, one of his class mate informed her that her son had suffered an attack in class and had been rushed to the Rokupa Government Hospital in critical condition.
The information left her in shock and confusion as she had last seen her son leaving the house for the Eastend, only to receive a contradictory and troubling account later. This left the family in a state of bewilderment, as the initial story they received from our classmate did not align with what was being shared at that moment.
Joshua Fouad Kamara, the class representative, provided clarification during the visit stating;
“As the class representative, I took the opportunity to clarify certain details regarding Victor’s attendance in class that day. I informed the family that Victor did not attend both 10am & 12-2 pm class on Thursday, which included both Civil Procedure and Equity and Trust lectures. This information was important because, even if Victor had been present during class and suffered an attack, the university has health facilities capable of providing first aid treatment and arranging for an immediate transfer to the nearest hospital if necessary. However, no such incident occurred at Fourah Bay College, nor was Victor in attendance.”
“It became evident that the situation surrounding his health was not connected to his classes or university premises, and there was no record of him experiencing any medical distress during the lectures that day. We explained to his family that these facts would be thoroughly checked, and we committed to ensuring they were fully informed about what had transpired.”
He further stated that during their interaction with the family, the class emphasized solidarity and promised to provide continuous moral and emotional support during this difficult time.
“As fellow students and friends, we assured the family that we would stand by them as they navigated this tragic loss,” he said. He also noted that they discussed the importance of giving Victor a befitting burial, with the class pledging to contribute in whatever way possible.
In conclusion, he stated: “Our visit to the family of the late Victor Onie Williams was a deeply moving and emotional experience. The family, in their grief, expressed gratitude for our presence and support. It was evident that the confusion surrounding Victor’s final moments had caused additional emotional strain, but our efforts to clarify the events that led to his passing were appreciated.”
