The Lawyers’ Society of Sierra Leone has expressed concern over the recent alleged coup attempt and commended the swift action taken by the security forces to neutralize the threat.
In a statement released today, the Society emphasized the importance of upholding democratic principles and the rule of law. While acknowledging the government’s efforts to maintain security, the Society called for transparency and accountability in the handling of the situation.
“It is vital that the public is informed about the nature and extent of the security response,” the statement read. “Such transparency will help maintain public confidence in the rule of law and our justice system.”
The Society also urged the government to foster an environment of tolerance and constructive criticism, emphasizing the importance of a robust opposition in a democratic society. They called on law enforcement to investigate all incidents of violence and threats, particularly against opposition figures and civil society actors.
“We call on the government, security forces, and all citizens to work together to preserve the democratic fabric of our nation,” the statement concluded. “Ensuring that all actions taken are within the confines of the law and in line with the ideals of justice, fairness, and respect for human rights.”
The recent security operation, which resulted in the fatal shooting of two alleged coup plotters, has raised concerns about the potential for further unrest.
On the afternoon of November 26, 2024, the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF), acting on credible intelligence, intercepted two fugitive officers believed to be involved in last year’s failed coup attempt.
The fugitives, Captain Aiah Aba Senesie and Captain T.L. Konteh, were located at a hideout in the Western Area Rural District, where they were reportedly planning further destabilizing actions. Security forces, including special units, swiftly moved to apprehend the individuals.
According to the government, the fugitives resisted arrest and opened fire on the security forces. During the ensuing exchange, both individuals sustained fatal injuries. The operation effectively disrupted what authorities described as another threat to Sierra Leone’s peace and stability.
