The Minister of Internal Affairs, AIG Morie Lengor Esq., has called on Local Unit Commanders (LUCs) of the Western Area Police to maintain high standards of discipline and professionalism as the festive season approaches.
Speaking at a meeting held at the Senior Officers’ Mess in Kingtom, Freetown, Minister Lengor emphasized the importance of vigilance, teamwork, and community engagement in ensuring a peaceful and secure holiday period.
In his address, the Minister urged the LUCs to be proactive and lead by example. Drawing from his own police experience, he stressed the need to foster a culture of discipline. “As leaders, you must lead by example,” he said, also calling for collaboration to overcome internal differences. “Teamwork is critical, and it must be prioritized in all your actions.”

Minister Lengor further emphasized the need for LUCs to actively engage with community stakeholders to build essential public trust. He issued a direct call to action, advising commanders to patrol their areas at least twice a week for greater visibility.
On promotions, the Minister proposed that LUCs be allowed to make recommendations based on clear, fair criteria. He also announced plans for a post-festive season gathering to celebrate the officers’ achievements.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) William Fayia Sellu, who also attended, expressed appreciation for the Minister’s direct engagement. “It’s encouraging to see a Minister engage directly with us instead of delegating the task,” IGP Sellu remarked.

The IGP assured the commanders that a festive season deployment plan was ready and promised support for committed officers. He also addressed promotions, confirming Minister Lengor would be consulted to ensure a fair process and encouraged commanders to “assert themselves” in their duties.
The meeting concluded with a commitment from both leaders to support the LUCs in ensuring safety and security across the Western Area during the festive period and beyond.
