Popular Activist and Founder of the 50/50 Group, Dr. Nemata Majeks-Walker has formally declined her recent appointment to the Board of Directors of the Guma Valley Water Company.
Majeks-Walker’s appointment was announced alongside three others in a public notice issued on December 2, 2025.
In a letter addressed to President Julius Maada Bio, Dr. Majeks-Walker expressed her gratitude for the confidence placed in her and her initial enthusiasm to support the administration’s vision of “radical inclusion.”
However, she informed the President that she would be unable to take up the post, citing strong advice from her family and the need to maintain professional neutrality.
According to Dr. Majeks-Walker, her family raised concerns that the parliamentary vetting process required for the position could be misinterpreted by the public as a political alignment. She emphasized that such a perception could compromise the non-partisan integrity required for her extensive work in accountability, peacebuilding, and women’s leadership.
The family’s apprehension is reportedly rooted in Dr. Majeks-Walker’s previous experience in public service. In her letter, she referenced her past tenure as Chair of the Hospital Teaching Service, noting that she was replaced without clear notice after implementing significant systems and reforms. She stated that this experience has made her children particularly protective and wary of her re-entering government-appointed roles.
Despite declining the offer, Dr. Majeks-Walker acknowledged the operational and logistical challenges facing the Guma Valley Water Company and expressed a sincere desire to see them addressed.
She concluded her correspondence with a respectful apology to the President, describing the withdrawal as a difficult decision driven by the need to shield her work from potential political fallout rather than a lack of willingness to serve the nation.
