Residents of Makeni, Gbendembu Chiefdom, have accused President Julius Maada Bio’s government of neglecting the Metehun Mayelagu Bridge, which they describe as a “death trap.”
The bridge serves as the sole transportation route for the community, and its deteriorating condition has created significant challenges for residents trying to transport goods and access essential services.
Community members reported that the bridge is so unsafe that it is abandoned during the rainy season. “Not pregnant women, not the injured, not school children or workers. Everybody stays put!” They lamented.
The frustration among the residents has grown, with many questioning whether the bridge’s location in a region that does not traditionally support the SLPP has contributed to its disrepair.
The residents expressed deep disappointment in the unfulfilled promises made by President Bio in 2018 regarding infrastructure development.
“Is Makeni still not part of the Sierra Leone map?” they asked, reflecting their feelings of neglect by the government.
The Gbendembu community has urged for immediate action from the government to restore the bridge, emphasizing its vital role in ensuring safe transportation and access for all residents.
