Kono District is poised to revolutionize maternal and child healthcare with the imminent completion of a new Maternal Center of Excellence (MCOE) in Koidu town.
This facility, a collaborative effort between the Government of Sierra Leone and Partners in Health, is expected to bring a new era of specialized care to the region.
The 120-bed inpatient facility is designed to provide exceptional maternal and child health services, incorporating advanced technology and fostering innovation. It will also serve as a hub for advanced training and clinical research, according to the Ministry of Health.
Minister of Health, Austin Demby, expressed his enthusiasm for the state-of-the-art facility, stating, “Get ready for the fulfillment of the President’s vision of quality and affordable healthcare for every Sierra Leonean with this revolution waiting to be unleashed.”
The MCOE is anticipated to transform healthcare for mothers not only within Sierra Leone but across the West African subregion. It will offer a global platform for advanced clinical learning and the exchange of expertise, aiming to enhance the capacity of local health professionals.
In preparation for its opening, the national steering committee of the Ministry of Health and Partners in Health met on July 3, 2025, to discuss the final stages of completion and plan for the official commissioning and handover of the center in the coming months.
Complementing the hospital is a new, purpose-built warehouse for the storage of medical equipment, drugs, and other healthcare supplies, ensuring the facility is well-equipped to serve its patients.
