As the world marked World Press Freedom Day under the theme “Shaping a Future at Peace,” the Media Freedom Coalition has issued a strong appeal for enhanced protection of journalists, warning that press freedom is facing increasing global pressure.

In a statement issued to commemorate the day, the Coalition—comprising 46 countries, including Sierra Leone—stressed that a free, independent, and pluralistic media remains essential not only for democratic governance but also for national and global security.

The Coalition noted that in conflict situations, credible and timely journalism plays a critical role in saving lives, countering misinformation, exposing violations such as war crimes, and fostering dialogue in divided societies.

The warning comes amid growing concern over the safety of media practitioners worldwide. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, at least 129 media workers were killed in 2025, making it the deadliest year for journalism in more than three decades of recorded data.

The Coalition also highlighted an alarming shift in which symbols traditionally associated with journalistic protection, such as “PRESS” insignia, are increasingly being viewed as targets rather than safeguards.

Beyond physical dangers, journalists are also facing mounting challenges including online harassment, censorship, economic instability in the media sector, and the growing influence of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence. The Coalition warned that these combined pressures are weakening the foundations of press freedom at a time when its role is more critical than ever.

It called on governments worldwide to take concrete steps to protect journalists, particularly those operating in conflict zones, and to ensure accountability for crimes committed against media workers. Ending impunity, it said, is vital to strengthening public trust in democratic institutions and safeguarding the role of the press.

Concluding its statement, the Media Freedom Coalition reaffirmed that supporting independent journalism is not only a democratic responsibility but also a crucial contribution to building a more peaceful, transparent, and informed global society.
