The Paul E. Farmer Maternal Centre of Excellence (MCOE)—a state-of-the-art facility on the Koidu Government Hospital campus- is set to open to patients in February 2026.

The centre was completed in October 2025, by Partners-in-Health (PIH) with support from the Sierra Leone Government was inaugurated by President Julius Maada Bio and the First Lady Fatima Maada Bio in late 2025.

The facility will serve as a step toward ending preventable maternal deaths in Sierra Leone, featuring Sierra Leone’s first NICU, piped medical gas system, and a design prioritising dignity and human rights.

The new hospital is located in Sierra Leone’s Eastern Province in Kono which already hosts a government hospital serving as one of the leading advanced diagnostics and clinical services centre in the West African nation.

According to PIH, over 62,000 patients visited the hospital last year, including close to 900 from neighbouring countries, Guinea and Liberia.

With foreign support from the free medical for lactating mothers and under 5s expected to cease by the start of 2027, the Paul E Farmer Maternal Centre of External Centre of Excellenc is expected to serve as a critical facility to support the maternal health sector of the country.

This 2026, PIH said Intensive staff training and system optimisation are already underway to ensure exceptional maternal and newborn care at the centre.
