The Government of Sierra Leone, through the Ministry of Information and Civic Education (MoICE), has announced the transformation of the Miatta Conference Centre into the new Miatta Civic Centre a national hub for civic expression, cultural celebration, creative innovation, and digital advancement.

In a press release issued by the Ministry on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, the initiative was described as part of President Dr. Julius Maada Bio’s broader vision to build inclusive community spaces that empower citizens and strengthen democratic values. According to the Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah, the new centre will play a key role in fostering national unity and participation.

“The New Miatta is central to building a civic culture of engaged citizens, connected to their past and free to imagine, express, and create the future,” said Minister Bah.

To guide the initiative, MoICE has established the Miatta Civic Centre Advisory Council, co-chaired by Mariama Anthony-Williams, a senior policy and governance leader, and Kate Krontiris, Principal of Studio Culture. The Council includes members from the creative economy, technology sector, civil society, international development, and government ministries.

The Council will provide strategic advice, promote the project locally and internationally, and help mobilize partnerships to ensure the centre becomes an inclusive and sustainable space.

The new Miatta Civic Centre is built on three key values:

Community First: A space designed by and for the people of Sierra Leone.

Innovation Hub: Fostering creativity and forward-thinking solutions.

Cultural Excellence: Celebrating diversity and artistic expression.

Located on the Old Railway Line behind the Youyi Building in Freetown, the Miatta Civic Centre will serve as a modern national hub where Sierra Leoneans at home and abroad can engage in civic dialogue, cultural expression, and digital innovation.
