A senior military officer from the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) has been taken into custody following allegations of raping a junior female officer.

The incident reportedly occurred on April 22, 2025, at Villa Four, Wilberforce, in Freetown.

Sources familiar with the matter allege that the Colonel instructed the female officer to prepare food at his residence for expected guests. Subsequently, he allegedly threatened her with violence and proceeded to sexually assault her.

The Campaign for Human Rights and Development International (CHRDI) released a statement confirming the detention of a senior RSLAF officer at the Wilberforce officers mess in connection with the alleged rape, which they stated occurred between 8 and 9 p.m. on April 22, 2025, with the detention taking place the following day, April 23, 2025.

CHRDI emphasized the urgency for military authorities to address such issues with seriousness and transparency, referencing previous concerns raised by the organization in January 2022 regarding sexual harassment and domestic violence within the RSLAF.

The organization called for a thorough investigation to ensure justice and maintain the integrity of the armed forces, stating they will continue to monitor human rights concerns within the military.

Abdul M Fatoma, Executive Director of CHRDI, expressed concern that the RSLAF is failing to create a safe environment for women serving in its ranks. He stated that female personnel continue to face sexual harassment, domestic violence, and rape within the military.

Fatoma highlighted the current detention of a Colonel as a “distressing situation” underscoring the urgent need for reforms to protect the dignity and safety of women in the armed forces.
