Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, Conrad Sackey, joined community leaders, educators, and students to commemorate the 11th African Day of School Feeding. The event highlighted the critical link between nutrition and academic success for children across Sierra Leone.
Under the theme “Ensuring Access to Nutritious Meals, Clean Water, and Hygiene,” the celebration served as a platform to advocate for holistic child welfare.
Minister Sackey emphasized that the initiative extends beyond simple meal provision, describing it as a fundamental investment in the nation’s human capital.
“No child can learn on an empty stomach. When we nourish our children, we strengthen our nation. Our children are our greatest resource,” Minister Sackey stated.
This year’s theme underscores the Ministry’s shift toward a more comprehensive approach to school welfare. By integrating clean water and hygiene (WASH) standards into the feeding program, the government aims to ensure schools are not just places of learning but safe havens for health and dignity.
The Minister noted that he was particularly moved by the voices of students and the dedication of local educators who facilitate the program daily. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to expanding these services, ensuring that every child in every community receives the nutritional support necessary to thrive in the classroom.
The event concluded with a call to action for all stakeholders to continue supporting school feeding, which remains a cornerstone of Sierra Leone’s educational strategy.
