The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Henry Musa Kpaka has officially launched the Ministry’s 2026 service delivery agenda with a strong focus on citizen engagement, climate-smart agriculture, and research-driven innovation.
In a major event held at Njala University, Dr. Kpaka handed over four irrigated greenhouses and the Chinese 14th Phase Agro-Tech Facility, supported by the World Bank–funded Food System Resilience Program (FSRP). The facilities are designed to strengthen research, innovation, and year-round production under the government’s flagship Feed Salone initiative.
Speaking at the ceremony, Dr. Kpaka emphasized the government’s commitment to bridging research institutions with national food security goals. “Njala University remains a strategic partner in driving agricultural transformation. These facilities will strengthen practical research, youth skills development, and year-round production to support Feed Salone,” he stated.
The event featured a symbolic harvest of sweet peppers, showcasing the potential of greenhouse farming. Dr. Kpaka affirmed that Feed Salone is not limited to rice production but also prioritizes vegetables as a source of income and nutrition.
“Feed Salone is not only about rice. We are also investing in vegetables through FSRP funding. I encourage women and youth to see vegetable farming as a short-cycle, labour-friendly opportunity to earn income and secure food,” he said.
FSRP Project Manager, Dr. Kepifri Lakoh, noted that the greenhouses are deliberately targeted at women and students to promote inclusive economic growth and nutrition-sensitive education.
“This intervention aligns with FSRP’s objective of building resilient food systems. By investing in modern infrastructure at Njala University, we are supporting innovation, technology transfer, and evidence-based solutions for farmers across Sierra Leone,” he explained.
Receiving the facilities, the Vice Chancellor of Njala University expressed gratitude to the Ministry and development partners. “These greenhouses and facilities will significantly enhance our teaching, research, and community outreach, while supporting national agricultural development,” he affirmed.
The handover ceremony is deemed as a major step in Sierra Leone’s agricultural transformation, combining modern technology, inclusive participation, and research-driven solutions to strengthen food security. With Njala University at the center of innovation, the initiative is expected to empower youth, women, and farmers while advancing the Feed Salone vision.
