On Monday, August 26, 2024, the Minister of Works and Public Assets, Denis Sandy, conducted an inspection of the ongoing road construction from Makolor Junction to Mabang Bridge, which passes through Songo. Accompanied by the Deputy Director General of the Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA), Ing. French, Minister Sandy assessed the progress of the critical infrastructure project being executed by contractor CSE.
During the site visit, Minister Sandy held discussions with CSE representative Mr. Diop and Reddy, one of the project consultants. The inspection revealed that the ongoing rainy season is significantly hampering construction activities. Despite the challenging weather conditions, Minister Sandy reported that asphalt work has been completed on a 2.5-kilometer stretch of the road.
“The pace of work is currently hindered by the rains, but we expect a significant increase in activity and progress once the rainy season concludes, likely in October,” Minister Sandy stated.
Minister Sandy expressed confidence in the project’s financial health, particularly regarding payments from the European Union (EU), which is a key financier. “There are no issues with payments, especially from the EU angle,” he confirmed, assuring stakeholders of the project’s continuity.
The Makolor Junction to Mabang Bridge project is a vital component of President Julius Maada Bio’s broader agenda for infrastructural development in Sierra Leone. The road is expected to significantly enhance connectivity and contribute to the socio-economic development of the country once completed.
“This road, when delivered, will add to His Excellency President Bio’s legacy on infrastructural development,” said Minister Sandy.
The project aims to improve access and transportation in the region, with anticipated long-term benefits for local communities and the national economy. The government remains committed to ensuring that all necessary resources are allocated to see the project through to its successful completion.
