As Sierra Leone prepares to commemorate its 65th Independence Anniversary on Monday, April 27, 2026, Chief Minister David Moinina Sengeh has issued a call for national soul-searching, urging citizens to look beyond political affiliations and assess their personal contributions to the country’s progress.
The Chief Minister’s message comes as the government announces a modest but symbolic celebration under the theme: “Building a Responsive, Resilient and Cohesive Sierra Leone.”
Dr. Sengeh’s reflection focused on everyday actions that shape society. He encouraged citizens to consider behaviours that negatively affect national development, such as tax evasion, illegal driving, environmental degradation, including building in swamps and deforestation.
He also highlighted the importance of positive civic responsibility, urging Sierra Leoneans to prioritise actions that benefit others, from simple habits such as punctuality at meetings to broader community efforts like tree planting and adherence to traffic regulations.
“It is so easy to want to tear each other apart,” Dr. Sengeh said. “My request to you, fellow Sierra Leoneans, is to pause, reflect, look within ourselves, and ask how exactly we are helping or not helping to bring more justice to the world.”
The Chief Minister also used the occasion to commend the leadership of President Julius Maada Bio. Despite what he described as an “unpredictable” global landscape in 2026, he said Sierra Leone remains a stable nation on a steady path of development.
Dr. Sengeh noted that while institutions, including political parties, require continuous reform, the delivery of a just society depends on the collective actions of government, the opposition, and citizens.
“Together, we are delivering,” he concluded, reinforcing the administration’s message as the country approaches another independence milestone.
