The Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education has intervened to ensure that Abubakarr Jalloh, a young boy whose education was recently interrupted, is enrolled in school.
The intervention was announced by the Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, Conrad Sackey.
Abubakarr, who is being raised by his mother, Famata Sesay, was reportedly misinformed by a neighbour that she needed to pay NLe 4,000 to secure her son’s admission into a government senior secondary school — a claim the Ministry has confirmed to be false. Abubakarr scored 18 in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and, although he did not meet the cut-off mark for his first-choice school, the placement system allows candidates within this score range to be admitted into other approved government-assisted schools.
Due to the misinformation and concerns about the distance to his second-choice school, Abubakarr had remained at home. Concerned community members, including Aunty Marie and Marima Serray Koroma, encouraged his mother to seek assistance and accompanied her to AYV Media Empire to bring public attention to the situation.
In response, Minister Sackey promptly engaged with Abubakarr and his mother, reviewing the circumstances with senior Ministry officials. While emphasizing that established rules and procedures cannot be breached, the Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring every child’s right to education and arranged for Abubakarr’s placement in a suitable school.
The Minister further urged parents and guardians to contact the Education Call Centre on 8060 for accurate information on school placements, stressing that the Ministry remains accessible, responsive, and committed to safeguarding children’s education.
