The Ministry of Information and Civic Education has signed a memorandum of understanding with Fourah Bay College, aimed at enhancing civic engagement and academic collaboration.
This partnership marks a significant milestone for both institutions, reflecting a shared commitment to advancing government communication, civic education, and the preservation of national heritage.
The Minister of Information and Civic Education thanked the leadership of Fourah Bay College for embracing the partnership, highlighting its strategic importance. Chernor Bah stated that the collaboration marks a significant step toward deepening public understanding of national issues and promoting civic responsibility, particularly among young people and students.
Professor Kelleh Gbawuru-Mansaray, Vice Chancellor and Principal of the University of Sierra Leone was in attendance at the signing ceremony. He expressed deep appreciation to the Minister for extending this partnership to the country’s oldest university, which has produced many of the nation’s distinguished professionals, several of whom were present at the event.
The Professor emphasized the university’s readiness and capacity to fulfill the objectives outlined in the memorandum. These include collaboration in government communication—aligned with the Department of Mass Communication; national history and civic awareness—linked with the Department of History and Political Science; and the preservation of government archives—relevant to the Department of Library Archive and Information Studies.
He welcomed the opportunity with gratitude and looked forward to implementing the agreement through meaningful initiatives. He also noted that Fourah Bay College has a strong track record of partnerships and is eager to see this new relationship flourish through shared goals.
Furthermore, the minister Chernor Bah pointed out that this partnership extends beyond the local context, referencing collaborations with international partners such as New York University and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation. These expanded partnerships aim to enhance the quality and reach of civic initiatives in Sierra Leone.
As part of the agreement, the Ministry and the University will co-organize national civic events, with the first being the upcoming Sierra Leone Independence Day celebration. While the country marks its independence on April 27, a national commemorative event will be held on April 28 at the Fourah Bay College Amphitheatre, anticipated to be the first of many joint national engagements.
