Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Employment, Labour and Social Security is investigating a fatal work accident that occurred on June 2nd, 2024, at the Queen Elizabeth Quay Cline.
The accident involved Mr. John Julius Conteh, who was employed by the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC).
The Ministry issued a press release assuring the public of a thorough investigation “as Provided for in Part VI, section 38 and 39 of the Factories Act 1974.”
According to the Ministry’s preliminary findings, MSC failed to report the accident to the relevant authorities, a violation of “Section 15 of the Women’s Compensation Act and Section 38 Of the Factories Act 1974.”
The Ministry confirmed they are collaborating with MSC to ensure compliance with labor laws. The press release also stated the Ministry’s commitment to resolving the incident “within the ambit as and when the investigation unfolds.”
