The Milton Margai Technical University has on Monday 14th February 2022 at The Great Hall, Goderich Campus, successfully concluded the orientation ceremony for newly admitted students for the 2021/22 academic year since its transformation last year.

The Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor and Director of Academic Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Alie Jalloh in his welcome address thanked the Acting Vice-Chancellor and Principal for his hard work and expressed his excitement by welcoming the new students, noting that, as an institution, they take everything seriously even the orientation ceremony compared to other institutions.

Describing them as the first crop of students since the institution was transformed into a University last year by His Excellency President Bio, Dr. Jalloh congratulated them for going through a rigorous admission process, though it was tough, he said they came out as the best-qualified candidates, noting that as an institution they take enrolment very seriously.

He advised them to be focused and take their academic work very seriously urging them to take responsibility for their learning.

In his statements, the Acting Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof Philip John Kanu welcomed the new cohort of students in the university, noting that many have been waiting for such a historic day.

He furthered that, the orientation ceremony is organized for new students to understand the nature of the university by explaining what the institution is expecting from them.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor and Principal exalts the Human Capital Development which is in line with the Free Quality School Education (FQSE) of His Excellency, President Brig. Rtd Dr. Julius Maada Bio’s government, stating that since its introduction in 2018, there has been a massive change in the education sector which have led to a high number of passes over the years especially in the West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and thanked the President for the continued support.

The transformation of two Polytechnics into Technical Universities of MMTU is one of the two. He explained how his government pay immense attention into the welfare of lecturers by promptly paying their salaries every month amidst all the global stress in the economy. He informed the students about the two significant salary increments of 50% and 25% in 2021 and January 2022 respectively. The handing over of the Chancellorship to worthy Sierra Leoneans.

He encourages the students in the various programs that; the path they have chosen is just the beginning of the beginnings in their lives, noting that, they can achieve whatever they set their eyes on as he explains his ordeals whilst he was a student.

The Principal said that, whatever knowledge they, as an institution is impacting in the students now, will be reflective after five years, that’s why they do their best to provide quality service, describing his staff as servants, reaffirming that this is not the Milton Margai they used to know.

He urged them to take their academic work very seriously, he emphasized on their dress code, their abstinence from cultism, and admonished the female students to respect themselves.

He, however, pleaded with them to be always closer to God as He is our guide and protector in whatever we do.

The central point during his remark was the payment of fees by the news students, noting that, they are required to pay their full fees to have a stay in the university.

He warned them about the exams office which he said is out of bound from students, he ended by welcoming all new students and wished them a success academic journey.

Statements were made by various speakers from all the three campuses; on the state of Congo Cross and Brookfields Campus, the Administrative and Academic Structure of the University, Rules, and Regulations of the University, Financial Obligations of Students, Effective Learning and Study Habit of Students, Attendance at Lectures, Regulations on Examinations and Exams Malpractices; standards of Assessment and Promotion, Policies of the Institution, Images of the University which has to do with dress code, cultism, and sexual harassment, a statement from the Medical facility, the use of College facilities, Religious life on campus, the Library facilities, sporting activities and a statement from the Student Union President.

The ceremony was chaired by the Acting Registrar of the University Mr.  Sherifu Bangura.
