The National Telecommunications Authority (NatCa), the Ministry of Information and Communication, Mobile Operators, Civil Society Organizations, Bike Riders Union, Market Women Organization, 50/50 Group, the media, and many others participated in a public-private dialogue on the increase of mobile tariff on December 2, 2022.
The mobile operators, industry participants, civil society representatives, consumers, and NatCa have all agreed to a pricing adjustment in a communiqué that was signed by the parties in the telecoms sector.
Based on the concerns raised by the mobile operators over the cost of production and the foreign exchange rate, it was decided that a review of tariffs is necessary to save the industry.
They emphasized the need of NatCa, the regulatory agency mandated by Section 116 2022 to inform the public about the reassessment of the tariff for data and on-net calls.
However, following the implementation of the new tariff, there may not be a tariff rise for six months from the date of the tariff review.
Further highlighting the need for quality coverage to support the social and economic development of the nation and for mobile operators to increase service delivery to their customers, it was agreed in the Communiqué that NatCa should ensure all mobile operators offer quality services in all rural communities.
