The Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Nabeela Tunis, represented Sierra Leone at the inaugural UN Tourism Africa and Americas Summit held in the Dominican Republic.
The summit aimed to foster collaboration between the two continents in the tourism sector, emphasizing cultural ties and historical connections.
In her remarks, Minister Tunis commended the Dominican Republic for successfully convening this pivotal summit, which seeks to build a bridge between Africa and the Americas.
She expressed gratitude for the warm hospitality extended to the Sierra Leonean delegation and acknowledged the efforts of Minister Collador and his team in organizing the event.
Minister Tunis underscored the significance of the cultural bonds that tie Africa and the Americas together, particularly highlighting Sierra Leone’s critical role in the historical narrative of the Atlantic slave trade.
“The relationship between our continents is not only historical but also deeply cultural, shaping our identities and traditions,” she stated.
She also explored the influence of African spiritual practices on religions in the Americas, noting how African culinary techniques and ingredients have enriched various traditions across the two continents.
The minister pointed out that many dishes are now enjoyed on both sides of the Atlantic, reflecting shared culinary heritage.
Furthermore, she addressed the profound cultural exchange initiated by the slave trade, which resulted in a unique blending of African traditions, languages, and customs with those of indigenous populations and European settlers.
This cultural fusion has given rise to distinctive cultural expressions, including Sierra Leone’s Creole, a widely spoken vernacular that encapsulates this historical melding.
Minister Tunis also remarked on the enduring impact of African musical traditions on the Americas, mentioning genres such as jazz, blues, samba, and reggae, all of which have roots in African rhythms and styles.
She concluded her address by emphasizing the importance of acknowledging and celebrating these shared histories and cultures, which contribute significantly to the vibrant tapestry of global tourism.
