The National Communication Authority (NatCA) has initiated a three-day technical meeting to advance the implementation of ECOWAS roaming regulations for mobile communication networks.

The aim is to harmonize roaming charges across ECOWAS member states. Mohamed Jalloh highlighted that the regulations, first adopted by ECOWAS in 2017, were initially introduced to Sierra Leone by Côte d’Ivoire, though The Gambia was the first to endorse them.

ECOWAS regularly tests member states for compliance, with Orange Sierra Leone making progress, while Côte d’Ivoire leads in adopting the protocols.

Amara Brewah, Director General of NatCA, emphasized that the initiative is crucial for strengthening regional relationships and boosting trade.

He clarified that while roaming will not be entirely free, travelers will avoid extra charges when making or receiving calls in other ECOWAS countries.

The meeting will review the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to move closer to enabling free roaming across the region.
