Communication services were disrupted in Bo, Kenema and surrounding areas on Sunday, July 14th, 2024, after a fiber optic cable was accidentally severed during drainage works in the Regent community.
The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) had undertaken the works to clear waterways and prevent flooding due to excessive rainfall. However, the process resulted in the severing of the cable, impacting service quality for both operators and consumers.
Responding to the disruption, the National Communications Authority (NatCA) worked collaboratively with stakeholders including Leonecom, the National Terrestrial Fiber Backbone Company, and other service providers to repair the damaged cable.
“We apologize for any inconvenience caused by the disruption,” a statement from NatCA said. “Normal communication traffic has now been restored through a redundant route.”
The Authority has assured continued collaboration with partners to prevent similar incidents in the future.
