During a meeting at Parliament before Members of Parliament (MPs), Andrew Jayah Kai Kai, Commissioner of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), made a fervent commitment to combat harmful drugs with the necessary support.
Speaking at a summoned parliamentary meeting, Kai Kai emphasized his unwavering dedication to tackling the issues of kush and other dangerous substances affecting the nation.
Kai Kai left no room for doubt about his determination to address the drug epidemic head-on. He stated that he would willingly step down if he failed to fulfill his promise to address the crisis, provided that the government and its partners equipped the agency with vital resources and empowerment. “I am ready to take responsibility if I fail,” Kai Kai declared firmly. “I am prepared to lead the fight against drug abuse.”
The Executive Director of the NDLEA, Andrew Jaiah Kaikai, further highlighted the agency’s challenges, expressing concern over their lack of resources. Kaikai revealed that the agency doesn’t even have a bicycle for its operations and struggles to afford necessities like electricity, with him covering expenses out of pocket.
“Last Thursday, I paid 1 million from my own pocket just for office electricity,” Kaikai disclosed during the meeting with MPs.
Kaikai’s call for support reverberated within the parliamentary chambers as he stressed the urgent need for assistance in combating drug abuse, particularly the proliferation of kush. He emphasized that without adequate support, the agency’s efforts would be severely hindered, leaving communities exposed to the harmful effects of drug addiction and trafficking.
Members of Parliament paid close attention as Kai Kai’s impassioned plea underscored the gravity of the situation and the government’s pivotal role in providing essential resources and empowerment to the NDLEA. The resounding message echoed throughout parliament: addressing drug abuse demands collective effort and unwavering commitment from all stakeholders.
As the nation grapples with the complex challenges posed by drug abuse, Kai Kai’s resolute declaration serves as a call to action and highlights the critical need to strengthen support for law enforcement agencies tasked with protecting communities from illicit drugs.
