The new Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Amb. Zhao Yong, paid a courtesy visit to Rt. Hon. Speaker Segepoh Solomon Thomas on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between Sierra Leone and China.
During the visit, Amb. Zhao expressed appreciation for the warm reception and admiration for Sierra Leone’s development achievements. He highlighted the country’s significant progress over the years and emphasized his commitment to the Sierra Leone-China Strategic People-to-People Cooperative Partnership, aiming to build on the existing friendship and cooperation between the two nations. He noted that his visit to Sierra Leone after 16 years underscores the importance China places on the bilateral relationship.
Speaker Thomas welcomed Amb. Zhao, highlighting the longstanding relationship between Sierra Leone and China, which spans over 50 years. He recalled Sierra Leone’s support for China’s nomination at the United Nations Security Council, demonstrating the country’s commitment to China.

The Speaker also reaffirmed that the Sixth Parliament represents the people, much like China’s National People’s Congress, and assured Amb. Zhao that he would enjoy the same strong relationship with Parliament as his predecessor.
Amb. Zhao expressed his desire to work closely with Parliament to deepen cooperation in key sectors including infrastructure, trade, investment, health, education, and technology. He assured that China would continue to support Sierra Leone’s development, noting that China has a deep understanding of the country’s progress.
The meeting concluded with a photo session symbolizing the strengthened ties between the two nations. Speaker Thomas invited Amb. Zhao to return to Parliament during the next adjourned session to engage with Members of Parliament.
Both countries remain committed to deepening cooperation and mutual understanding, with the strategic partnership expected to yield benefits in economic growth, development, and regional stability.
