NP SL has commemorated World Day for Safety and Health at Work, a day globally set aside to focus international attention on emerging trends in the field of occupational safety and health.
This year’s theme centers on exploring the “Impacts of Climate Change on Occupational Safety and Health.”
As a responsible oil marketing company, NP understands the effects of climate change. This underscores the reason for the Company to join this year’s campaign to discuss the effects of climate change on its line of business.
Consvonne Macrae, Finance and Accounts Manager NP (SL) Limited reminded all workers that their lives are more valuable than any properties or investment. As their staff spends more time at work compare to their houses, he emphasized on the need for them to show strong interest about happenings surrounding the company because they are all stakeholders.
He acknowledges that NP has Policies and Procedures when it comes to the environment. He further emphasized on the need for staff to be vigilant and must not be complacent if they notice any environmental hazards because fire is their biggest risk
Speaking on the theme, Mr. Macrae encouraged workers to develop the habit of drinking water to help prevent them from dehydration as a result of the prevailing hot weather conditions. He pointed out that safe and healthy working environment also means addressing dangerous climate change impacts in the workplace adding that mainstreaming occupational safety and health is at the core of the NP mode of Operations.
Representative of the NP Tanker Drivers Sheikie Kabbah appealed to the Np Management to facilitate the plying of their Tankers at the Abacha street route for safe delivery. He further calls for the company to do conduct more training for drivers on the use of the Calibex technology
Alpha B,H Sheriff, Director of Efire Safety and Logistics Ltd emphasized on the new to embrace safety measures to ensure the protection of lives . He encouraged vehicle owners to regularly change their oil in order to mitigate climate change,
The event was attended by Management, staff, bulk road vehicle (BRV) drivers, and representatives of the Kissy Shell community.
To mark the significance of the Day, a March procession was held from Lower Shell Kissy main junction to its terminal. Following the march, different speakers addressed the attendees on the theme. To end the event, demonstration activities, including the use of fire extinguishers and gunpoint hoses were conducted.
The programme was climaxed by a fire simulation exercise to help prepare Np Staff for a real fire emergency response.
Climate change is already having serious impacts on planetary health, human health and the world of work. As this problem intensifies, workers around the globe find themselves at an increased risk of exposure to hazards such as excessive heat, ultraviolet radiation, extreme weather events, air pollution, vector-borne diseases and agrochemicals. Numerous health conditions are linked to climate change, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, respiratory illnesses, and mental health disorders.
The annual World Day for Safety and Health at Work on 28 April promotes the prevention of occupational accidents and diseases globally. It is an awareness-raising campaign intended to focus international attention on the magnitude of the problem and on how promoting and creating a safety and health culture can help reduce the number of work-related deaths and injuries.
