The National Water Resources Management Agency (NWRMA) represented Sierra Leone at the 2025 International Workshop on Frontiers in Ecohydrology, held from 12–25 October in Chongqing, China.
The workshop was hosted by the Chinese Academy of Sciences in collaboration with UNESCO’s International Hydrological Programme (IHP).
Assistant Director of Hydrological Services, Ishmail Kamara, participated alongside global experts to examine innovative approaches linking ecology and hydrology for sustainable water management and climate resilience.
Kamara highlighted the practical value of the exchange. “The workshop provided an exceptional platform to learn about nature-based solutions, including constructed wetlands and ecological engineering techniques, which improve water quality and restore ecosystems,” he stated. “Field visits demonstrated how science, policy, and community action can integrate to protect water resources.”
During the seminar, the NWRMA team shared Sierra Leone’s experiences in watershed protection, catchment restoration, and community-led engagement models.
The Agency outlined its intent to apply insights gained from the workshop to advance integrated land-water management, strengthen multi-stakeholder partnerships, and build climate-resilient ecosystems.
The participation positions Sierra Leone as an active contributor to international dialogues on ecohydrology and sustainable water governance.
