The nationality of a man identified as Omar Sheriff, linked to a European drug trafficking investigation, remains a point of contention, according to Sierra Leone’s Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah.

The case centers on a mysterious figure resembling a Caucasian man, suspected of involvement in large-scale drug trafficking in Europe. The Dutch government has identified this individual as Jos Leijdekkers and has formally requested his extradition from Sierra Leone. However, the Sierra Leonean government maintains that the man in question is Omar Sheriff, leading to questions about his true identity and nationality.

In an interview with AYV, Minister Bah addressed the ongoing investigation. He stated that he could not confirm Omar Sheriff’s nationality, as the police had not provided him with that specific information. “I love to do this job, but most importantly, I love to provide accurate information to the public,” he emphasized.

Minister Bah explained that his knowledge of the case is based solely on information provided by the Sierra Leone Police, who have launched an investigation. “Whatever information that I am aware of on the issues has been provided by the police,” he said.

“When I would have been briefed by the Inspector General of Police, then I would come back to provide more information, but based on their investigation, they said that the identity the person was carrying was Omar Sheriff.”

He reiterated that the police had identified the individual as Omar Sheriff, but had not disclosed his nationality. “That name is what the police had put forward, and that is what I know. They didn’t say what the nationality was,” he concluded.
