The nationality of a man identified as Omar Sheriff, linked to a European drug trafficking investigation, remains a point of contention, according to Sierra Leone’s Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah.
The case centers on a mysterious figure resembling a Caucasian man, suspected of involvement in large-scale drug trafficking in Europe. The Dutch government has identified this individual as Jos Leijdekkers and has formally requested his extradition from Sierra Leone. However, the Sierra Leonean government maintains that the man in question is Omar Sheriff, leading to questions about his true identity and nationality.
In an interview with AYV, Minister Bah addressed the ongoing investigation. He stated that he could not confirm Omar Sheriff’s nationality, as the police had not provided him with that specific information. “I love to do this job, but most importantly, I love to provide accurate information to the public,” he emphasized.
Minister Bah explained that his knowledge of the case is based solely on information provided by the Sierra Leone Police, who have launched an investigation. “Whatever information that I am aware of on the issues has been provided by the police,” he said.
“When I would have been briefed by the Inspector General of Police, then I would come back to provide more information, but based on their investigation, they said that the identity the person was carrying was Omar Sheriff.”
He reiterated that the police had identified the individual as Omar Sheriff, but had not disclosed his nationality. “That name is what the police had put forward, and that is what I know. They didn’t say what the nationality was,” he concluded.
Very brave answer from the minister
Applauds for the brave minister.
But I want to express concern on the fact that Mohamed K. Mansaray was the first to tell us the correct name this man is using in Sierra Leone so as to cover his true identity as a wanted Dutch citizen.
Does the police also been provided information by Mohamed K Mansaray ?
This repeated denial and dodging by the Govt (of Salone) is getting pretty silly and dumb. Reuters categorically asserted that, through facial recognition tools, the image of the man in the video captured at Tihun is an exact match of the fugitive wanted by the Dutch Govt, It is irrelevant at this point what name the man goes by. Can the Salone Police, and by extension, the GOSL refute the claim by Reuters? How did Salone Police ID Omar Sheriff? Salone Police had told us they have the best cybersecurity unit in Africa, save for South Africa.
Let assume he is a wanted figure for Duth government but has done nothing wrong in sierra Leone , I will preferred him to those politicians stollen our monies and investing in America or out of our country …..They ar protecting bad people rulling down Africa , just in the name of keeping their wealths …so let Umar sheriff be ! Thank God we don’t know his way about ….wunar nor focus for make wunar country , always dea over media pa buku talk …..Most idlers nar over sea dem park , den nor dea help them country den dea nor over media pa buku talk ..wishing Bad for thier country
