A one-storey building collapse in Freetown’s Cemetery Junction has resulted in the death of one individual and left four others injured, the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) has confirmed.
The tragic incident occurred at approximately 6:15 PM on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at No. 4 Congress Road.
The building, which housed a daycare on the upper floor and a residential dwelling below, collapsed during a rehearsal by a men’s union team from the Blessed Assurance International Bible Church, who were preparing for a Thanksgiving Service.
Saio Kamara, a member of the church group, was fatally injured in the collapse and his body has been taken to the Rokupa Mortuary. Four other individuals sustained injuries.
Two have since been discharged from hospital, while the remaining two, who are in critical condition, have been transferred to Connaught Hospital for further treatment.
The NDMA, under the direction of Director of Relief and Response Sinneh Mansaray, swiftly deployed a rapid response team to the scene.
The team’s immediate priorities were to assess the damage, provide assistance to the victims, and ensure the safe evacuation of all occupants. Security personnel were also deployed to maintain order and stability in the area.
Residents in the vicinity have been urged to remain calm as the NDMA continues to monitor the situation. The agency has assured the public that it will provide further updates as more information becomes available.
The cause of the collapse is currently under investigation.
