The Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Hon. Abdul Kargbo, has called for the immediate resignation of the Clerk of Parliament, citing serious breaches of constitutional provisions and the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC) Act.

In a formal letter addressed to the Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Kargbo expressed “grave concern” over the Clerk’s public declaration of intent to contest for the position of Secretary General of a political party.

He described the move as a “direct contravention” of Section 15(a)(ii) of the PPRC Act, which prohibits public officers from holding executive positions in political parties, and Section 26(2)(b) of the 1991 Constitution, which bars public officers from participating in the affairs or management of political parties.

“These provisions are unambiguous in their intent to shield the public service from partisan political influence, particularly within sensitive institutions such as Parliament,” the letter stated.

“The Clerk’s decision to publicly associate himself with a political party and seek elective office within it is a fundamental violation of these legal and constitutional restrictions, and a direct threat to the impartiality of Parliament.”

In addition to the alleged political ambitions, Hon. Kargbo also accused the Clerk of making derogatory public statements about opposition members, behavior he described as incompatible with the Clerk’s obligation to serve all Members of Parliament with impartiality and professionalism.

Hon. Kargbo warned that if the Clerk does not resign voluntarily, he would cease all engagement with him and would no longer recognize his authority in Parliament. He also indicated that further parliamentary measures would be pursued to uphold the integrity and neutrality of the legislative institution.

The letter concluded with a call for the Speaker to treat the matter with the urgency it deserves.
