The Parliament of Sierra Leone, on Tuesday 21st March 2023, debated and passed into law two Bills that are geared towards the development and improvement of the employment industry within and outside Sierra Leone.
The enacted Bills by the Parliament of Sierra Leone include:
The Work Permit Act, 2023 which seeks to repeal part V1A of the Non-citizens (Registration, short time immigration and Expulsion) Act, 1965, (Act No.14 of 1965), to provide for the regulation of the Non-citizens in Sierra Leone and to provide for other related Matters and
The Overseas Employment and Migrant Workers Act 2023 seeks to provide for the regulation of Overseas Employment, provide for the protection of the rights and welfare of migrant workers and members of their families and provide for other related Matters
Earlier, both related Bills have been extensively debated and went through several consultations and scrutiny before they were enacted into law.
After the simultaneous passages of the Bills, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Alpha Timbo Esq, who piloted both Bills expressed thanks and appreciation to all those who contributed meaningfully to what he described as “service to the State”.
He referred to the documents as very significant properties of the Nation and informed Parliament that, they would transform the economic well-being of the people, and address unemployment challenges within and outside Sierra Leone.
