The Deputy Speaker of the Sixth Parliament, Hon. Sengepoh Solomon Thomas, has established a Public Interest Committee to address public interest issues and provide advisory support to the government.

According to the Deputy Speaker, the Committee is tasked with investigating the misuse of laws enacted by Parliament concerning revenue collection, reviewing agreements approved by Parliament, and assessing the capacities of companies to meet their legal obligations to Sierra Leoneans.

Additionally, the Committee will focus on the misuse of tax waivers and other public interest matters.

The said Committee is set-up in conformity with Section 93 (4) of Act No. 6 of the 1991 Constitution which reads: “Notwithstanding anything contained in subsections (1) and (2), Parliament may at any time appoint any other Committee to investigate any matter of public importance.”

Speaker Segepoh Thomas, made this declaration on Monday, 16th December, 2024 in the Well of Parliament during a session when the various Sub Appropriation Committee Chairmen were submitting their reports in the Well.

The Committee is chaired by the Speaker, Hon. Sengepoh Solomon Thomas and deputized by the deputy Speaker, Hon. Ibrahim Tawa Conteh.

The new Committee will comprise all the leaderships of Parliament including the Clerk of Parliament who will serve as its Secretary.
