Parliament of Sierra Leone has on Tuesday 13 July 2022 adjourned the ongoing debate on the public Elections Act 2022 Bill.
After several submission by the opposition and the government bench in the house of Parliament on the ongoing bill titled the public Elections Act 2022 A Dilatory motion was moved to suspend the debate to a later date.
At the House of Parliament today 13 July 2022 on the Proportional Representation ( PR ) Bill which has been on debate since yesterday but has been adjourned to tomorrow the main opposition party the All People’s Congress has been pushing for the said bill not to pass into national Law especially the section 32 subsection 8 of the 1991 Constitution which talks about the misbehavior of Electoral Commissioner that should be change to gross misconduct.
According to the speaker Dr Abass Bundu he state that PR was introduced into the laws as far back as 2001 by way of a constitutional amendment that was encapsulated in Section 38A. Therefore…it is already embedded in the laws of Sierra Leone, in the Constitution of Sierra Leone, the highest law of our land.”..
The Bill seeks to repeal and replace the Public Election Act, 2022 (Act No.4 of 2012), to provide for supplementary provisions to sections 32 and 33 of the Constitution of Sierra Leone 1991 (Act No. 6 of 1991).
A Dilatory Motion was moved by Leader of Government Business Hon. Mathew Shar Nyuma and it was seconded by the Deputy Leader of Government Business Hon. Bashiru Silikie.
